  Behavioural Changes with Environmental Volunteering

We have investigated the impact of environmental volunteering with BTCV Cymru on behaviours and attitudes to the environment. Findings implied that there was a link between volunteering with BTCV, increased feelings of connectedness to nature, an increase in both local and global environmental awareness and a change in behaviour incorporating ‘environmentally friendly’ practices into everyday life (Figure 1).

Connection to nature is considered to be an important predictor of ecological behaviour and subjective well-being. The connectedness to nature scale (CNS) was used in this study to assess whether volunteering with BTCV and being exposed to nature increases an individual’s sense of feeling connected to nature.

Connectedness to nature scores increased with length of time volunteering with BTCV Cymru and frequency of volunteering significantly increased the CNS scores and those participants who volunteered at least once a week were more connected to nature than those who volunteered less than once a week.
