  Bushcraft

Stemming from our research into the health benefits of spending time in nature and the damaging effects of disconnection, the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Essex has now set up an undergraduate teaching module in bushcraft. It is one of the first University’s in the UK to establish such a scheme.

The students will take lessons outdoors learning how our ancestors, and indigenous peoples today, interact with their local environments, how they can use their local species as foods and medicines, and hopefully forge a relationship with the environment that will last a lifetime.

The course includes an optional field trip to Norway to learn about how the Sámi interact with their sub-Arctic environments, the cultural importance of nature and reindeer to the Sámi, and how the Sámi culture has survived 300 years of assimilation efforts. As part of our ongoing research program, the health and well-being impacts of participation in the bushcraft course will be assessed and analysed.
