  Views of Nature

Proof of principle - established in a laboratory, where 100 subjects exercised on a treadmill whilst viewing a series of rural or urban pleasant and unpleasant pictures. Only those subjects viewing rural pleasant scenes experienced significant decreases in blood pressure (see Figure), but all pleasant green scenes enhanced mood and self-esteem.

An 8.7% decrease in blood pressure was reported after exercising whilst viewing rural pleasant pictures compared with a 1.9% decrease when faced with a blank screen and a 3.3% increase in blood pressure after viewing urban unpleasant pictures.

Graph showing changes in arterial pressure after exercising wilst viewing different scenes

All participants viewing rural pleasant pictures experienced a reduction in their mean arterial blood pressure compared with only 60% of people when exposed to the other picture conditions.

When viewing both urban and rural pleasant scenes, levels of self-esteem increased by 10% and 9% respectively. This was in comparison with a 7.5% increase after viewing no pictures and only a 4% increase after viewing unpleasant pictures.
